Meeting between Michelle Bachelet and Bernard Garcia Larrain on the global surrogacy market in the UN context<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Casablanca expert Group announces that a one-hour working meeting took place on January 14, 2026, between Bernard Garcia Larrain, Executive Director of the Casablanca expert Group, and former President of Chile, Michelle Bachelet, in the context of her candidacy for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations.<\/strong> The meeting was held at the headquarters of the Fundaci\u00f3n Horizonte Ciudadano in Santiago, Chile.<\/p>\n

Michelle Bachelet, a physician and mother, has served as Minister and twice as President of Chile, Executive Director of UN Women, and United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. She is currently a candidate for UN Secretary-General, as confirmed yesterday by the President of Chile, Gabriel Boric, although her candidacy has not yet been formally submitted to the United Nations.<\/p>\n

The meeting focused on the analysis of the global surrogacy market and its implications for human rights, as well as the protection of women and children.<\/strong><\/p>\n

During the discussion, the work carried out by the Casablanca expert Group was presented, including its research, positions, and analytical contributions aimed at examining the transnational dynamics of surrogacy, as well as the risks associated with the commodification of women\u2019s bodies and the violation of children\u2019s fundamental rights.<\/p>\n

In this context, former President Bachelet was presented with the testimony of Olivia Maurel, a feminist activist born through surrogacy, as part of the Group\u2019s efforts to incorporate the voices of those directly affected by this practice. She was also given Olivia Maurel\u2019s book, Where are you, mummy?, which shares her personal experience, critical reflection on surrogacy, and her call to abolish this practice worldwide.<\/p>\n

Both parties agreed on the importance of strengthening an informed international debate, promoting evidence-based approaches, and ensuring that public policies and regulatory frameworks prioritize human dignity, the protection of vulnerable individuals, and consistency with international human rights commitments, while preventing the commodification of women and children.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Casablanca expert Group values this exchange as a meaningful contribution to the global debate and reaffirms its commitment to continue collaborating with international leaders, providing independent and rigorous analysis within the framework of international reflection and decision-making processes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Michelle Bachelet, m\u00e9decin et m\u00e8re de famille, a \u00e9t\u00e9 ministre et Pr\u00e9sidente du Chili \u00e0 deux reprises, Directrice ex\u00e9cutive d\u2019ONU Femmes et Haut-Commissaire des Nations Unies aux droits de l\u2019homme. Elle est actuellement candidate au poste de Secr\u00e9taire g\u00e9n\u00e9rale de l\u2019ONU, comme l\u2019a confirm\u00e9 hier le Pr\u00e9sident du Chili, Gabriel Boric, bien que sa candidature n\u2019ait pas encore \u00e9t\u00e9 officiellement d\u00e9pos\u00e9e aupr\u00e8s des Nations Unies.<\/p>\n

Au cours de l\u2019\u00e9change, le travail men\u00e9 par le Groupe d\u2019experts de Casablanca a \u00e9t\u00e9 pr\u00e9sent\u00e9, incluant ses recherches, positions et contributions analytiques visant \u00e0 examiner les dynamiques transnationales de la gestation pour autrui, ainsi que les risques associ\u00e9s \u00e0 la marchandisation du corps des femmes et \u00e0 la violation des droits fondamentaux des enfants.<\/p>\n

Dans ce contexte, la Pr\u00e9sidente Bachelet a pris connaissance du t\u00e9moignage d\u2019Olivia Maurel, militante f\u00e9ministe n\u00e9e par gestation pour autrui, dans le cadre des efforts du Groupe visant \u00e0 int\u00e9grer les voix des personnes directement concern\u00e9es par cette pratique. Elle a \u00e9galement re\u00e7u le livre d\u2019Olivia Maurel, O\u00f9 es-tu, maman?, qui relate son exp\u00e9rience personnelle, sa r\u00e9flexion critique sur la gestation pour autrui et son appel \u00e0 abolir cette pratique au niveau mondial.<\/p>\n

Les deux parties ont soulign\u00e9 l\u2019importance de renforcer un d\u00e9bat international \u00e9clair\u00e9, de promouvoir des approches fond\u00e9es sur des donn\u00e9es probantes et de veiller \u00e0 ce que les politiques publiques et les cadres r\u00e9glementaires privil\u00e9gient la dignit\u00e9 humaine, la protection des personnes vuln\u00e9rables et la coh\u00e9rence avec les engagements internationaux en mati\u00e8re de droits humains, tout en \u00e9vitant la marchandisation des femmes et des enfants.<\/strong><\/p>\n

El Grupo de Expertos de Casablanca informa que el 14 de enero de 2026 se celebr\u00f3 una reuni\u00f3n de trabajo de una hora de duraci\u00f3n entre Bernardo Garc\u00eda, Director Ejecutivo del Grupo de Expertos de Casablanca, y la ex Presidenta de Chile, Michelle Bachelet, en el contexto de su candidatura al cargo de Secretaria General de las Naciones Unidas.<\/strong> El encuentro tuvo lugar en la sede de la Fundaci\u00f3n Horizonte Ciudadano, en Santiago de Chile.<\/p>\n

Michelle Bachelet, m\u00e9dico y madre de familia, ha sido ministra y dos veces Presidenta de Chile, Directora Ejecutiva de ONU Mujeres y Alta Comisionada de las Naciones Unidas para los Derechos Humanos. Actualmente es candidata a la Secretar\u00eda General de la ONU, tal como fue confirmado el d\u00eda de ayer por el Presidente de Chile, Gabriel Boric, aunque la candidatura a\u00fan no ha sido formalmente presentada ante Naciones Unidas.<\/p>\n

La reuni\u00f3n se centr\u00f3 en el an\u00e1lisis del mercado global de la maternidad subrogada y sus implicaciones en materia de derechos humanos, as\u00ed como en la protecci\u00f3n de las mujeres y los ni\u00f1os.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Durante el encuentro, se abord\u00f3 el trabajo desarrollado por el Grupo de Expertos de Casablanca, incluyendo sus investigaciones, posicionamientos y aportes anal\u00edticos orientados a examinar las din\u00e1micas transnacionales de la maternidad subrogada, as\u00ed como los riesgos asociados a la mercantilizaci\u00f3n del cuerpo de las mujeres y a la vulneraci\u00f3n de los derechos fundamentales de los ni\u00f1os.<\/p>\n

En este contexto, se present\u00f3 a la ex Presidenta Bachelet el testimonio de Olivia Maurel, militante feminista nacida mediante maternidad subrogada, como parte de los esfuerzos del Grupo por incorporar las voces de las personas directamente afectadas por esta pr\u00e1ctica. Asimismo, se le entreg\u00f3 el libro de Olivia Maurel, \u00bfD\u00f3nde est\u00e1s, mam\u00e1?, que recoge su experiencia personal, su reflexi\u00f3n cr\u00edtica sobre la maternidad subrogada y su llamado a abolir esta pr\u00e1ctica a nivel global.<\/p>\n

Ambas partes coincidieron en la importancia de fortalecer un debate internacional informado, promover enfoques basados en evidencia y garantizar que las pol\u00edticas p\u00fablicas y los marcos normativos prioricen la dignidad humana, la protecci\u00f3n de las personas en situaci\u00f3n de vulnerabilidad y la coherencia con los compromisos internacionales en materia de derechos humanos, evitando la mercantilizaci\u00f3n de las mujeres y de los ni\u00f1os.<\/strong><\/p>\n
