Olivia Maurel, author of Where Are You, Mom? (O\u00f9 es-tu, maman ?, \u00c9ditions du Rocher) and international spokesperson of the Casablanca Declaration, visits Slovakia from September 21 to 24, 2025 for the launch of her book and a series of high-level events calling for the universal abolition of surrogacy.<\/p>\n

A Personal Story, A Global Cause<\/b><\/p>\n

Born through surrogacy in Kentucky, Olivia Maurel openly shares the trauma of being separated from her birth mother and speaks against the commodification of women and children. Her book, already published in several languages and soon appearing in Spanish, Slovak and Dutch has received strong resonance worldwide.<\/p>\n

As spokesperson of the Casablanca Declaration, endorsed by more than 150 global experts and personalities from across the political and religious spectrum, she delivers a clear message: surrogacy is not an act of love, but a new form of exploitation that must be abolished everywhere.<\/p>\n

Highlights of the Slovak Visit \u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

During her stay in Bratislava, Olivia Maurel will address the Health Committee of the Slovak Parliament alongside the Children\u2019s Ombudsman Jozef Miklo\u0161ko, engage in a public discussion on her book, lecture at the Faculty of Law of Comenius University, and participate in a national TV debate. She will also meet with MEP Miriam Lexman, Catholic and Lutheran bishops, and students from the Anton Neuwirth College. Each of these moments will provide opportunities to share her testimony, debunk common myths around surrogacy, and present the Casablanca Declaration as a new abolitionist movement.<\/p>\n

A Decisive Moment for Slovakia<\/b><\/p>\n

This visit comes at a crucial political moment: the Slovak Parliament is currently debating a constitutional amendment that would ban surrogacy agreements.<\/p>\n

Article 15 of the Slovak Constitution is to be amended by adding a new paragraph 5 reads as follows: \u00ab\u00a0(5) An agreement to give birth to a child for another shall be prohibited\u00a0\u00bb (Slovak Republic, Urgent Opinion on the draft amendements to the Constitution<\/i>, 24 September 2025, pursuant to Article 14a of the Venice Commission’s Revised Rules of Procedure, \u00a7 44-46 HERE<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Olivia Maurel will contribute her testimony and expertise to remind lawmakers that this issue is neither political nor religious: it is about human dignity, the fundamental rights of women and children, and social justice.<\/p>\n

A New Abolitionist Movement<\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cSurrogacy is the slavery of our century. It reduces women\u2019s bodies to commodities and children to contractual products. The Casablanca Declaration is a new abolitionist movement, following in the footsteps of those who once fought to end slavery,\u201d says Olivia Maurel.<\/p>\n

Her visit to Slovakia aims both to support local voices calling for a ban and to send an international call for unity against a global industry projected to be worth hundreds of billions of dollars in the coming decade.<\/p>\n

The appeal by the UN Special Rapporteur for the abolition of surrogacy<\/b><\/p>\n

The movement for universal abolition has just received a major boost with the publication in July of the report by the UN Special Rapporteur on violence against women and girls, Reem Alsalen, on surrogacy, which recommends that States condemn surrogacy in all its forms and calls for the universal abolition of the practice. The report will be presented to the United Nations General Assembly in early October (see the report HERE)<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Une histoire personnelle, une cause mondiale<\/b><\/p>\n

N\u00e9e par gestation pour autrui dans le Kentucky, Olivia Maurel partage ouvertement le traumatisme d’avoir \u00e9t\u00e9 s\u00e9par\u00e9e de sa m\u00e8re biologique et s’\u00e9l\u00e8ve contre la marchandisation des femmes et des enfants. Pendant son s\u00e9jour \u00e0 Bratislava, Olivia Maurel :<\/p>\n

Cette visite intervient \u00e0 un moment politique crucial : le Parlement slovaque d\u00e9bat actuellement d’un amendement constitutionnel qui interdirait les contrats de gestation pour autrui.<\/p>\n

Un nouveau mouvement abolitionniste<\/b><\/p>\n

Sa visite en Slovaquie vise \u00e0 la fois \u00e0 soutenir les voix locales qui r\u00e9clament une interdiction et \u00e0 lancer un appel international \u00e0 l’unit\u00e9 contre une industrie mondiale dont la valeur devrait atteindre des centaines de milliards de dollars au cours de la prochaine d\u00e9cennie.<\/p>\n

L’appel de la Rapporteuse sp\u00e9ciale ONU pour l’abolition de la GPA<\/b><\/p>\n

Le mouvement pour l’abolition universelle vient de recevoir un encouragement majeur avec la publication, en juillet, du rapport de la Rapporteuse sp\u00e9ciale ONU sur les violences faites aux femmes et aux filles, Reem Alsalen consacr\u00e9 \u00e0 la gestation pour autrui, qui recommande aux Etats de condamner la gpa sous toutes ses formes, et invite \u00e0 l’abolition universelle de la pratique.
