| Presse release 28 February / French below Olivia Maurel, young woman born through surrogate motherhood and spokesperson for the Casablanca Declaration for the universal abolition of surrogate motherhood, and Bernard Garcia, coordinator of the Declaration, are in Croatia to promote the conviction that the abolition of surrogacy is not only necessary but possible, and that States can and must commit themselves to this goal. On Tuesday 27 February, they were received, with MP Marijana Petir, by theSecretary of State at the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs Andrea Metelko-Zgombić, the Minister’s adviser Ivan Mašina, the head of the analytical sector Antun Buklijaš and the head of the human rights department Marko Paškvan. On Wednesday 28 February, they met the Secretary of State for the Family, Margareta Mađerić before a meeting with the Apostolic Nuncio in Zagreb and then an evening with Croatian students. Thursday 29 February 2024 at 10:00 am (Croatian time), they will address the Croatian Parliament as part of the round-table discussion: «Surrogacy – exploitation of women and child trafficking» at the invitation of the Chairman of the Croatian Parliament’s Family, Youth and Sports Committee, MP Professor Vesna Vučemilović, PhD. Olivia, born through surrogacy and spokesperson for the Casablanca Declaration, appeals to politicians: «please don’t be fooled by the adverts that surrogacy agencies post on their websites to make you believe that this is a gift, a blessing.» Whatever the terms, whether surrogacy is paid or unpaid, «there is ALWAYS the contract in which the little human being is treated as a product to be handed over when finished. For me, that was the first thing that really hurt to know that I’d been exchanged for a cheque.» Olivia warns of the wound of abandonment to which separation from the birth mother exposes the child: «Whether the child is biologically linked to the surrogate mother or not, believe me, it doesn’t matter. On the day when the baby is supposed to come into the world to meet its mother, it is ripped away from her and placed in the arms of complete strangers. These babies will feel an emptiness throughout their lives, the emptiness of having lost their mother, and let me tell you that unfortunately, this abyss can never be filled by personal experience.I’m actually 32 years old, and all my life I’ve tried to fill this void: with drugs, alcohol, even buying a ton of animals, naively thinking that this would close this wound so deep that I felt like I was bleeding. It took me 32 years to understand and stop trying to fill that void with the help of my psychologist and psychiatrist». Olivia and Bernard will also be announcing the International Conference for the Universal Abolition of Surrogate Motherhood, to be held in Rome on 5 and 6 April.  |

Ils ont été reçu mardi 27 février, en compagnie de la députée Marijana Petir, par la Secrétaire d’État au Ministère des Affaires étrangères et européennes Andrea Metelko-Zgombić, le conseiller du ministre Ivan Mašina, le chef du secteur analytique Antun Buklijaš et le chef du service des droits de l’homme Marko Paškvan. Mercredi 28 février, ils ont rencontré la secrétaire d’État à la famille, Margareta Mađerić avant une rencontre avec le Nonce Apostolique à Zagreb puis une soirée avec des étudiants croates. Jeudi 29 février 2024, ils s’expriment à 10h00 (heure croate) devant le Parlement croate, dans le cadre de la table-ronde : «La maternité de substitution – exploitation des femmes et trafic d’enfants» à l’invitation du Président de la Commission de la famille, de la jeunesse et des sports du Parlement croate, le professeur adjoint Vesna Vučemilović, PhD, Député. Olivia, née de GPA et porte-parole de la Déclaration de Casablanca, adresse un appel aux politiques : « s’il vous plaît, ne vous laissez pas tromper par les publicités que les agences de maternité de substitution publient sur leurs sites Web pour vous faire croire qu’il s’agit d’un cadeau, d’une bénédiction.» Quelles que soient les modalités, que la GPA soit rémunérée ou non, « il y a TOUJOURS le contrat dans lequel le petit être humain est traité comme un produit à remettre une fois terminé. Pour moi, c’est la première chose qui m’a vraiment blessé de savoir qu’on m’a échangée contre un chèque.» Olivia alerte sur la blessure d’abandon à laquelle la séparation de sa mère de naissance expose l’enfant : « Que l’enfant soit lié biologiquement à sa mère porteuse ou non, croyez-moi, cela n’a pas d’importance. Le jour où bébé devrait venir au monde pour rencontrer sa mère, bébé lui est arraché pour être placé dans les bras de parfaits inconnus. Ces bébés ressentiront un vide au cours de leur vie, le vide d’avoir perdu leur mère, et laissez-moi vous dire que malheureusement, cet abîme ne pourra jamais être comblé par une expérience personnelle. J’ai en fait 32 ans, et toute ma vie j’ai essayé de combler ce vide : par la drogue, l’alcool, même en achetant une tonne d’animaux en pensant naïvement que cela refermerait cette blessure si profonde que j’avais l’impression d’être saigner. Il m’a fallu 32 ans pour comprendre et arrêter d’essayer de combler ce vide avec l’aide de mon psychologue et de mon psychiatre ». Olivia et Bernard annonceront également le grand Rendez-vous de la Conférence internationale pour l’abolition universelle de la gestation pour autrui qui se tiendra à Rome les 5 et 6 avril prochain. |
